I compile my own PHP, partly to learn more about how PHP is put together, and partly because I'm always finding I need modules that aren't available by default, and this way I have control over that. My problem is that I can't get JPEG support in PHP. Using CentOS 5.6. Here are my configuration options when compiling PHP 5.3.8:

To enable GD-support configure PHP --with-gd[=DIR], where DIR is the GD base install directory. To use the recommended bundled version of the GD library, use the configure option --with-gd. GD library requires libpng and libjpeg to compile. In Windows, you'll include the GD2 DLL php_gd2.dll as an extension in php.ini.

So the problem was not with the png library, but rather with the PDFlib. Even though all the threads led to a png-problem... so I have simply upgraded to PDFlib 4.0.3 (w/o any special configure arguments; --with-libpng didn't work anyways), recompiled PHP, and now everything works (imagepng, pdf creation, etc.).
