Oct 07, 2017 · I just bought a Power Mac G5 and it came with no OS. I just installed a new 500 GIG hard drive and tried installing Snow Leopard. However the OS would not load. I did a little more research and found that only Intel base Mac can support OS X (Snow Leopard). So back to my original question what OS can I get for my PowerMac G5?

'Snow Leopard' and the Death of PowerPC Support, Carl Nygren, Classic Macs in the Intel Age, 2008.06.23. It looks like Mac OS X 10.6 will only support Intel Macs - and possibly only 64-bit ones at that. Should G4 and G5 owners start looking at Linux?

Will Snow Leopard Support Some PowerPC Macs? Low End Mac

If Apple does release Snow Leopard as an Intel-only operating system, all those high-end G4 and G5 users will be very annoyed. After all, the last Power Mac G5 models (the 2.0 GHz and 2.3 GHz dual-core and 2.5 GHz quad-core) were only discontinued in August 2006, so some of these high-end Macs have been in use for less than two-and-a-half years ...

Aug 21, 2015 · Your G5, as stated, pretty much maxes out at 10.5.8. You can try running a Linux distro on it, if you really need to, once Leopard's support completely ends. Leopard is still rather usable for most things, though, so keep that G5 around!

I would like to write one for Mavericks in the future, but I think that in terms of compatibility, SL is a better starting point.
