Jul 03, 2007 · Large drive support The first tower G4 that has "large drive support" (meaning larger than 128 gigabytes when plugged directly into the logic board's ATA bus) is the Quicksilver 2002. If you want a larger drive in a Mac model earlier than this, you can use either a PATA or SATA PCI slot controller card, with a corresponding drive plugged into it.

However, this may not be ideal. Except for the Mirrored Drive Doors G4 models (August 2002 and later) and the G5s, G4 Power Macs have an internal ATA/66 drive bus, and most of them (particularly the pre-Quicksilver models) don’t support drives over 128 GB on the internal drive bus.

The Power Mac G4 MDD (Mirrored Drive Doors) was the 3rd Major Revision of the Power Mac G4. It Included an 867MHz, 1GHz, or 1.25GHz PowerPC G4 CPU in single or dual configurations, and a Dual 1.42GHz PowerPC G4 CPU. This computer was the fastest, most powerful G4-Based Macintosh, before Mid-2004 when Apple introduced the Power Mac G5.

Officially, the Power Mac G4 Cube models do not support "big drives" and typically need a third-party driver, such as one from Intech to use hard drives larger than 128 GB.
