BUT the ps3 does NOT support the analog 5.1 setup. Most standalone blu-ray players do, but the ps3 doesn't. No game console does. The ps3 only does 5.1 and up with optical and hdmi.

Unfortunately, the default behavior for 5.1 audio in games, while running through a 7.1 configuration, is to send surround audio to the rear speakers, which is incorrect and ruins the surround effect; Resident Evil 7 is an example of a 5.1 game that properly sends audio to side surround when running through a 7.1 configuration.

Apr 03, 2016 · Ideally if a game supports 5.1 or better they will check with your Windows speaker settings and behave accordingly; if you have Windows configured for 5.1+ the game will go with that, if it supports surround. But you'll sometimes have to check, double-check, tweak and hack to force your games to perform how you want.

The PS3 cannot bitstream LOSSLESS audio via HDMI cable. It will play the lossless core tracks as their lossy DVD counterparts (Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1). Likewise, an optical cable will do the same thing...
