1) The PS3 CAN in fact play subtitled DIVX files, but the key here is that the files must be linked. There may be a way to play external SRT/SUB/IDX but I haven't yet figured it out.

Jul 08, 2012 · I've tried mkv2vob but it didn't support subtitles (only srt) So my question is how can I properly convert a 3D SBS mkv with sup or idx/sub (not srt) so I can watch it with PS3? I don't mind if I have to re-encode it but I would prefer to avoid that Thank you

Apr 25, 2008 · If you update to firmware 2.20, ps3 can now play xsub and idx+sub graphic based subtitles, there's still no support for external subtitles. If you have srt files, you can use programs such as aviaddxsub or sub2divx to remux the subtitles into the avi file to create a new divx file.
