So if you want to use a Raspberry Pi to watch Windows Media Center recordings you will need the MPEG-2 decoder but unless you want to watch WMV files you don’t need the VC-1 option. If you want to watch DVD files all you need is the MPEG-2 decoder.

May 21, 2015 · I amended the config.txt file 2 days ago, and rebooted both Pi’s at least twice afterwards (as detailed earlier). But mpeg decodeding did not work after each reboot. However it did work 24 hours later (and neither Pi had been rebooted during that time). This isn’t a support query by the way, so please don’t take it as one.

If its MPEG-2 or VC1 then you should be able to purchase a codec and play it just fine. Note that (at time of writing) the Raspberry Pi does not support playback of files encoded with the DIVX3 codec, which appear in VLC as type "MPEG-4 Video v3 (DIV3)". Mar 18, 2018 · The RasPi does not have hardware decoding support for any other video codec other than H.264 out of the box, so you will need to have all video files converted into H.264 format in order to play them smoothly. Alternatively, you can buy a license to unlock MPEG-2 and VC-1 decoding.
