Students who learned about reading based on Atwell's list of negative modeling probably don't enjoy reading and don't seek it out. However, I suspect a high percentage of students who sat in her reading workshops in the 1980s are avid readers today. If sustained silent reading has an ultimate goal, it would be to create lifelong readers.
