    Dec 11, 2008 · Not quite. m4a is a container format (basically the same as MP4 but without the video), so it could be other codecs as well as ALAC. It could be an AAC file bought from the iTunes store with a DRM wrapper, and thus will need either iTunes or Quicktime to play it - which wont be playable on a Squeezebox etc (or any non-Apple device - thanks Apple) unless you strip the DRM.
