The subversion plugin always checkouts broken symbolic links(whose target file is missing) as normal text files with the content of "link target-file-name", no matter which SVN version is selected(from 1.4 to 1.8). Meanwhile, it's OK to check out complete symbolic links(whose target file exists).

Jun 11, 2010 · Syncro SVN Client only enables the symbolic link support for Linux. It should have been enabled on Unix systems as well but this was overlooked. I've logged this to our issue tracking tool and we'll address it in the next release. Meanwhile you can use a workaround for the Syncro SVN Client launched on the Unix machine.

Some VMs do not support symbolic links in shared folders, so various parts of Kaldi will fail. (Especially when the host is Windows) I realize these may be esoteric corner cases, and most people won't try this, but wanted to make a note that things can go differently than expected because of symbolic links. They're still mighty useful.
