There were significant background differences between Windows 2012 and Windows 2012 R2, as such you will need Backup Exec 2014. Backup Exec 2010 R2 does not support Server 2012 at all and yes, in this instance, support means it doesn't work right. Server 2012 was added only to 2010 R3, and only with service pack 3. Additionally, storage server 2012 is technically not even supported with 2010 R3, but core, standard, datacenter, essentials, and foundation are.
