Jun 06, 2008 · Question: Q: The POP server “mail. . ” doesn’t support X-APOP authentication. I get this message intermittently which prevents me from receiving email for days at a time. Then, it just goes away. Though now it appears to be stuck on it. i have checked and re-checked my POP account settings and they are all as they should be.

If the server should not support APOP, we will show a warning message to the user, that "secure authentication is required by current account configuration, but not supported by the server". Just for completeness, I would like to mention: There are more mechanisms to do "secure authentication" than just APOP. There is also CRAM-MD5.

Oct 14, 2008 · Outlook Express for Windows doesn't support APOP. APOP is md5 encryption method for authenthicating before retrieving email. If APOP is enabled on the server, MailEnable doesn't require that they use it. SPA is Microsofts authentication method using NTLM, which we don't support.

Anyway, the Authentication settings is found in the Advanced area of your email accounts. This may only happen to your default email account if you’re on POP. If your e-mail client uses APOP, then the password is encrypted while being transmitted. APOP prevents hackers from seeing your password information with sniffer programs. My question is :Is that the major difference between APOP and POP? Is the password not encrypted when POP protocol is used? If not, will it not cause security concerns?

May 16, 2013 · The server only support PLAIN. It sounds to me as the server disconnects already when it see the APOP. It does dot support any of the MD5, so no use for the plugin. Sad, because all other email programs go direct to the server without problems.

APOP is an encryption type used only for POP clients.. Login, Clear, and Plain are unsecure authentication methods that send passwords unencrypted. If you choose these in addition to the more secure authentication methods, clients that don’t have the more secure methods set up are allowed to log in without encryption.
