Dec 13, 2008 · I can export to mp3 files, but when I try to open an mp3 file, I receive a message that this version of Audacity was not compiled for mp3 support. I have hunted everywhere I can think of for a compiled version of Audacity (I am not confident about compiling from source myself) without success.

This version of Audacity was not compiled with MP3 files support. If you need support for MP3 or other proprietary formats, you'll need to go back and install a version of Audacity that has this. Generally, this version is known as Audacity Freeworld - and you can see that it is listed in the section above on Audacity installation - underneath the version we installed.

You are experiencing this error because the version of audacity that you are using might not have been compiled to support mp3. Since, it was not compiled such way to support the mp3 format, you would have to firstly uninstall it then install it from other source. Use the command to remove audacity: sudo yum remove audacity.

- Installing the ZIP version of LAME. I stored it in my Documents folder and pointed to it within Audacity. That didn't work. - Finding every directory even remotely related to Audacity and starting over. That didn't work. I'm honestly not sure what to even try at this point. Any help much appreciated!
