Aug 07, 2007 · I tried playing this ripped version through VLC, Xine Player and MPlayer and it still doesn't work. So then I tried burning it on a disk to see if that would work. And no it doesn't. I also tried a program called Matinee which is supposed to play ripped DVDs through the Mac DVD player and that doesn't work either.

Nov 29, 2004 · Need help with Xine playing DVD's I'm trying to play DVD's on my laptop using Xine. I'm testing with three different commercial DVD's; one works great (menus and all), one plays the FBI warning then stops with an error, a third doesn't work at all (hit play, get an error!).

May 18, 2016 · As for xine, you'll still need libdvdcss before it is able to play DVDs. Pat doesn't include it due to copyright issues. SBo does have a SlackBuild for it, and if you install it, xine might work without any additional requirements. However, it may also require recompiling xine to add support for libdvdcss. I'm honestly not sure.

Xine is clearly playing DVDs at a resolution higher than 720x480. My suspicion is that the video window is actually 800x600 but I have no way to measure it. In a way, this would make sense, because 720x480 isn't actually a 4:3 aspect ratio.
