We helped the Taliban drive the Soviets out of Afghanistan - and they turned around and provided support, comfort and training ground for anti-American Arabs who came in and plan terrorist attacks against the US and other countries. Because at the time, the Soviets were seen as a greater threat, and they were a greater threat. The Soviets were spreading all over Eastern Europe and were aliening themselves with other Communist nations.
