First: yes, anything you can (or at least normally would) do with a stencil buffer can undoubtedly be done in some other way. Like most parts of a graphics card, the question is whether the extra hardware lets you do the job faster (and I'm pretty sure the answer is often yes).

Mar 17, 2019 · 2 part question: how much video memory is used by the screen without any OGL or DX app running? obviously, this is at least widthheight[2432]bits, but is that all? it’s not like the normal windows/linux/OSX screen needs depth, alpha or stencil information.
