Oct 24, 2017 · You don't buy the license again, you just need to renew support. You should be able to get a quote right on the VMware site. If I remember, the last time we renewed our Essentials (when we had essentials) was about $2300 total for 3 years.

Jan 14, 2018 · VMware offers "SnS" (Subscription and Support). An active subscription entitles you to upgrade (and downgrade, if needed) to new versions free of charge. The licenses are perpetual, i.e. everything will continue to work. It's up to you to renew SnS once it's going to expire.

VSAN had a hard bundle option where it is truely "free" with horizon advanced and enterprise, and it has soft bundled with certain VSphere SKUs that give you double digit discounts.
