Sep 18, 2017 · I have a SYS-E200-8D Micro Server, and wanted to use an external USB 3.0 enclosure (with an SSD disk) as an additional Datastore. I can mount the external enclosure without any problems within ESXi as an additional Datastore, but it is only attached through USB 2.0, therefore the read/write throughput is quite small.

The only thing I can think of, but wasn't able to verify yet, I have connected a USB 2.0 USB thumb drive to an internal USB 3.0 header as the ESXi boot drive, maybe this USB 2.0 device forces the whole bus to be on USB 2.0 level !? I will try to figure this out in the next days. Reply Delete

ESXi 5.1 has USB 3.0 support, sort of... TinkerTry IT @ Home

    https://tinkertry.com/esxi-5-1-sort-of-supports-usb-3-0
Sep 26, 2012 · VMware ESXi 5.1 has USB 3.0 support, but it's currently limited to using the vSphere Web Client to map client-side USB 3.0 devices to the remote VM. Long story short, turns out ESXi 5.1 doesn't really support USB 3.0 in the way you might think. In other words, if your system running ESXi 5.1 has USB 3.0 ports, that's nice!

Oct 19, 2015 · In my latest post USB Devices as VMFS Datastore in vSphere ESXi 6.0 I had a problem with USB 3.0 devices that are detected as USB 2 in ESXi. I know that USB 3.0, also known as eXtensible Host Controller Interface (xHCI), is supported in ESXi 6.0 and ESXi 5.5 Build 2143827 or later. Unfortunately all of my devices are detected as USB 2.1, despite the USB 3 hub was visible.
