Jun 09, 2010 · Unfortunately the NIC that VMware emulates does not support Multicast (some intel nic). I ran into this problem running (Junos - thats juniper OS) on vms for testing porpuses, routing protocols that used multicast traffic will not work. And had to be tweaked to use Unicast which made it all the much difficult.

Multicast Snooping. In multicast snooping mode, a vSphere Distributed Switch provides IGMP and MLD snooping according to RFC 4541. The switch dispatches multicast traffic more precisely by using IP addresses. This mode supports IGMPv1, IGMPv2, and IGMPv3 for IPv4 multicast group addresses, and MLDv1 and MLDv2 for IPv6 multicast group addresses.

1006525, NLB Multicast Mode – Static ARP Resolution Since NLB packets are unconventional, meaning the IP address is Unicast while the MAC address of it is Multicast, switches and routers drop NLB packets. NLB Multicast Packets get dropped by routers and switches, causing the ARP tables of switches to not get populated with cluster IP and MAC address.
