I'd love to enable USB 2.0 for my WinXP VMs without having to uninstall player, install workstation, perform the upgrade, uninstall workstation, and re-install player.

Oct 26, 2017 · Thanks for replying, Wil. So I gather that you can't install any third party driver, when using VMware. If a device isn't supported "out of the box" (from the OS), WMware won't allow using it. I remember that Windows 7 and Windows 2008R2 (as it's server counterpart) didn't support USB 3.0, as this finally was managed by Windows 8.

May 23, 2013 · I haven't looked for it in the "documentation" lately but I did read it at some point, probably the Release Notes. Also if you plug a USB 3.0 Device in a Linux Virtual Machine and look at the USB & Bluetooth Settings it says, "Using USB devices with a USB 3.0 controller requires Linux kernel 3.2 or newer." so I'd call that defacto documentation.

I am running a Windows 7 guest OS on VMware Player from Windows 7. However, when I insert a USB jump drive the guest OS can not access it. VMware Player tells me the stick is connected, but it does not appear on the guest OS 'my computer'. The same is true with my network card. VMware Player detects it, but I am unable to join any networks.
