After inserting the new RAM, I started to get the BSOD on startup, and if it got through somehow, it would BSOD again a few hours later.

Or will it gently ignore the extra ram? 32 bits OSs will only address 4gb memory whatever the OS is. Why would you want to put 8gb RAM if you use a 32 bits OS? Use 64 OS with more than 4 gb RAM.
