DVD support in Xine is a little complex due to the uncertain legal situation regarding software capable of decoding DVDs encrypted with the Content Scrambling System (CSS). The xine developers do not support CSS descrambling. The use of this software for watching your legally purchased DVDs may be illegal in your country. You need to install libdvdcss rpm besides xine-lib and xine-ui. Without libdvdcss you won't be able to watch encrypted DVDs, that is, most of them.

Nov 16, 2006 · Actually I just found out that XINE can play ripped DVD from hard drive. In the setup input tab just replace the DVD device with the pathname on the hard drive where the movie is. Or one can also edit the 'config' file in.xine directory to specify 'input.dvd_device' to point to where on the hard drive the ripped DVD locates. It works great.
