Depth Buffers (Direct3D 9) - Win32 apps Microsoft Docs

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/direct3d9/depth-buffers
Nearly all accelerators on the market support z-buffering, making z-buffers the most common type of depth buffer today. However ubiquitous, z-buffers have their drawbacks. Due to the mathematics involved, the generated z values in a z-buffer tend not to be distributed evenly across the z-buffer range (typically 0.0 to 1.0, inclusive).

W-Buffering - Windows drivers Microsoft Docs

By contrast, when w (or eye-relative z) is used, the buffer bits can be more evenly allocated between the near and far clip planes in world space. The key benefit is that the ratio of far to near is no longer an issue, allowing applications to support a maximum range of miles, yet still get reasonably accurate depth buffering within inches of the eye point.

Corpses being rendered above vehicles is looking glitchy and bugging me for quite some time. Somehow not easy to fix. The ZOffset is ignored. I tried adding it to sequences and hard-coded into the corpse effect. Already fixed by #10119.

Z-buffering - Wikipedia

The z-buffer uses the Image space method for hidden surface detection. A z-buffer can refer to a data structure or to the method used to perform operations on that structure.
