The Air Support Unit operates five helicopters and one airplane to accomplish its various public safety missions. All five helicopters operated by the unit are former military aircraft and operated pursuant to Federal Aviation Regulations – Part 91.

Today, the Air Support Unit is based at Mesa's Falcon Field Airport. It consists of eight full-time helicopter pilots, who are also proficient Tactical Flight Officers, seven part-time Tactical Flight Officers (all of whom are Mesa Police officers), two mechanics and one civilian Air Support Unit Administrator.

Air support (helicopter) unit The King County Sheriff’s Air Support Unit is the only full-time rotary-wing law enforcement aviation unit in Washington State. Four other counties (Chelan, Thurston, Snohomish and Spokane) each operate helicopters on a limited, part-time basis, primarily for wilderness Search & Rescue and wilderness firefighting support.

The Air Support Unit was created in October of 1996. The unit is located at the Fresno Airport. The McDonnell Douglas 500E helicopter was selected as our preferred aircraft and two ships were purchased in Arizona to start the program.
