Oct 30, 2010 · Most granite countertops are installed on laminate, melamine, or plywood cabinets and if yours are in good shape with no structural damage, they will be more than strong enough to support the weight. The granite company may charge you to remove the existing laminate tops, but it shouldn't be much, and I'm not sure you want to tackle it yourself ...

Jul 25, 2009 · I worked for a kitchen cabinet shop for about 2 years and dont ever remember them building the base cabinets any different for laminate countertops or for granite or such. You figure that base cabinets usually arent much more than 36” wide and 22” deep or so. By nature they are pretty strong even with 1/2” plywood sides.

A granite slab of the size you describe and 1 1/4 inches thick would weigh about 300 pounds. A 3/4 inch slab, about 200 pounds. This is on top of an island that may weigh 100 to 300 pounds, depending on how it is constructed. if you add some contents, the total weight with the thicker granite will probably be between 500 and 700 pounds.

Sep 07, 2014 · I’ve seen it in hundreds of kitchens – people get rid of their old laminate counters and install beautiful, new granite. The counters look wonderful, but now the old oak cabinets they’re resting on look even worse by comparison. Now what? Can the granite be removed and reinstalled on new cabinets?
