Sep 12, 2011 · We have run into similar problems before, it is not just the individual file name but the entire path that makes up the "long file name", so all the nested folders contributed to this length. Have you the user look at all the folder names along the path, some of them may need to be shortened with abbreviations, etc.

Now in my case, I was dealing with a couple thousand File names that were too long. And I could not identify where all of the Files were located. In the past the maximum supported file length was 260 characters (256 usable after the drive characters and termination character). In Windows 10 long file name support can be enabled which allows file names up to 32,767 characters (although you lose a few characters for mandatory characters that are part of the name).

Sep 21, 2012 · The length of paths quickly adds up and may not exceed 255. Copying the file to a longer destination path would render the file inaccesible in standard ways. Consider to try copying the files to a shorter destination path (not to c:\folder\longfolder\subfolder\folder\ but to c:\x\for example). Please post back if that does not work either.
