Jul 10, 2013 · "The destination does not support long file names. Please enter a name for this file" to which it then offers a file name without spaces as an option. My question is what would cause this to be an issue for this specific user. I have already tried remapping the network drive to no avail.

Sep 12, 2011 · We have run into similar problems before, it is not just the individual file name but the entire path that makes up the "long file name", so all the nested folders contributed to this length. Have you the user look at all the folder names along the path, some of them may need to be shortened with abbreviations, etc.

Nov 12, 2012 · The problem is then that if you have one of these hard drives or one of these external drives that is using a disk format that does not support long file names - well, you can't copy files that have long file names to that drive. So, what I would recommend you do is: Double-check the format of the external drive that this happens to;

In the past the maximum supported file length was 260 characters (256 usable after the drive characters and termination character). In Windows 10 long file name support can be enabled which allows file names up to 32,767 characters (although you lose a few characters for mandatory characters that are part of the name).

What will work is taking spaces OUT of the directory name -or- the file name. It will probably work okay if either of them have spaces but NOT BOTH. Strange but true. In most cases I advise folks to keep long file names and scratch long directory names using anacronyms instead like PWC\planning\teams or AFG\financial\committee.
