Dec 22, 2007 · Both the optical cable and the digital coaxial have the ability to support true 5.1 surround sound. Out of the two, you want to use the fiber-optic cable. The digital coaxial is an older, analog connection.

Mar 13, 2013 · Sending audio to this via optical output from tv to optical input to 5.1 receiver. My surround sound system is a Panasonic sc-pt760. It does not have an hdmi input. So to get my "surround sound" I have hooked up a clear colored Philips Optical cable and the tv sends all audio to my Panasonic surround sound receiver to its optical input.

The only sound card that I am aware of that comes with drivers for doing DTS-output over SPDIF in all applications and games is the Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium (ie. the most ass-hat expensive one of them) that I have on my desktop.
