Phones (such as an iPhone 4s A1387) sold for use on a cellular company, by industry standards, that cellular company will not unlock device for use for another cellular company, nor will a major company unlock a competitors phone for use on their network.

That's because in the former case you're not jumping network types. Also, swapping phones on GSM networks is easier because GSM-compatible phones use SIM cards.

Jul 03, 2014 · The Sprint iPhone 4S (along with the Verizon iPhone 4S) does have a GSM side to the device that is used for International Roaming. The GSM side of the device is locked by the service provider to block it from using domestic GSM networks (such as AT&T or T-Mobile) at the firmware level and can't be unlocked.

Sprint also does WiMAX, a 4G technolgy but that is not supported on the iPhone4S. Sprint is starting to deploy LTE, but again that is not a supported tech on the iPhone 4S. As for AT&T they use GSM for voice and have HSPA for data. They too are deploying a LTE network. The iPhone 4S does support GSM and HSPA.
