IzyMail provides a IMAP gateway to hotmail and yahoo that you can use with Thunderbird, though its not free.

Mar 17, 2014 · I have several Hotmail accounts managed by Thunderbird. On March 11th, they all stopped working. None can be authenticated and I am not able to send nor receive email. I can access them fine with the web browser version of Hotmail, but can't use these accounts with Thunderbird. I am on build 24.3.0 of Thunderbird.
