Doom used a mouse if a mouse driver is loaded by the config.sys file. Doom didn't have mouse-look. But, it did use a mouse for direction and the left mouse button for firing weapons.

Sep 05, 2004 · ZDoom is a stand-alone replacement to Doom.exe or Doom95.exe. After installing the game, drop ZDoom.exe into your Doom folder and run it. You don't need to worry about Doom 95 or it's crappy mouse support any longer.

May 10, 2014 · Hi all, I just got Ultimate DOOM and DOOM II Steam versions today and immediately put together fixes for both of them to disable the mouse y-axis, making them control much more like modern shooters. Dec 12, 2012 · Isn't Mouse support a little bit unfair? I mean, play Doom 1 E1M1 without mouse support on nightmare. With mouse support, it will be a little bit easier. How could anything be fair, or unfair in a single player game? Isn't it all about enjoying the game?

"GZDoom has mouselook which is something that was broken after Windows 95" Doom.exe still allows mouse support ('mouselook' is a term I wouldn't use when referring to the vanilla engine); it's only Doom 95 (the 'official' Windows port) that sucks balls when it comes to mouse support on a modern OS.
