Nov 24, 2013 · There is a distinction between multi-thread and multi-core programming. Games have been multi-threaded since the days of single core cpus. For example, I would use threading in applications to isolate Windows forms to their own thread, separate from main thread.

Apr 23, 2018 · Personally I would not touch a quad core unless you are on a very strict budget and I would even be cautious about the longevity of a 6 core CPU without hyper threading. When games do start to become more core hungry I can see them being in a similar situation to quad cores before too long.

I mean hell, things as old as Quake 3 works with multicore. teebeenz "Works with" and "take advantage of" are two different things. This is about games that specifically support dual core CPU's, not just run on them.

Because separate programs will run on their own core so even if the game only uses 2, other programs can use the others and will steal less performance from the cores running the game. That being said though, right now benchmarks show a fast dual core outperforming a lower clocked quad core in almost every game.
