Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP) is a Cisco proprietary redundancy protocol that is used to establish a fault tolerant default gateway. It has been described in detail in RFC 2281.The protocol establishes a framework between network routers to achieve default gateway failover, if the primary gateway becomes inaccessible.

Configuring VRRP on Juniper as well as other network equipment can vary significantly depending on the devices. Many load balancers also support VRRP and their configuration is specific to each of these devices. Here are some configuration examples as seen on a Cisco router: HSRP Configuration Example. My company uses juniper hardware and our datacenter is providing redundant connection with HSRP. They have told me to set up layer 2 for the connection to work. Am I correct in thinking that juniper setup would be transparent mode, which defeats the purpose of our firewall? Is it possible to setup HSRP with juniper? There are 2 SRX is setup up.

HSRP and VRRP are in no way compatible as the protocol mechanics differ greatly. I suggest to configure VRRP on the Cisco router which is available in Cisco IOS software and thus can speak with your Juniper router. HTH--Leon * Please rate posts.

Oct 31, 2015 · As VRRP is an open standard, it’s interoperable between both Cisco and Juniper devices. If it were just using Cisco devices, I would have had a choice between VRRP or HSRP (Hot Standby Router Protocol).HSRP works similar as VRRP but it’s a Cisco Proprietary Protocol, which means it’s only compatible between Cisco devices.

The issue is with PIM and HSRP not working well together. If a static route is used from the NetScreen to the HSRP cluster, the next hop device needs to match the NetScreen's PIM neighbor. Generally, the PIM neighbor will be one of the physical IP addresses of the routers in the HSRP cluster, and not the HSRP …
