If you need Direct3D then you can try VMware Workstation. In VMware you can enable Direct3D, it's not working perfectly, but you can try it and see if it's good for you. I hope they will add support for DirectDraw and Direct3D in VirtualBox soon.

I'm trying to get an old game from 2000 working on my XP guest, and as far as I can tell, it uses Direct3D 7, which unfortunately doesn't seem to be supported in the Virtual Box guest, only direct3d 8 and 9 are? The game works with DirectDraw only, but the performance is horrendous. Anyone have any ideas how to get such a game working?

Select Direct3D Support component: Approve the VirtualBox drivers - they have not been signed by Microsoft: Reboot your machine.
