Besides that, the Linux emulation layer in ESXi loads after VMkernel, which raises questions as to whether you could actually get ESXi booted correctly with a software RAID.

When you create a guest vm create 2 identitcal vmfs volumes and attach it to the guest vm. use software raid when you install guest os. Guest os will have redundancy in this case, but not for esxi hypervisor.3/5(2)

Apr 12, 2014 · It is extremely annoying that in ESXi 5.5 VMWare dropped support of even booting off so-called "software RAID" controllers. I just tried upgrading one of my hosts from 5.1 to 5.5. This host has a pair of 60GB SSDs in RAID-1 on mobo built-in Marvell controller used for ESXi booting, scratch and local cache, and was working beautifully under 5.1.
