Aug 06, 2008 · Educate grub/grub2 and grub-installer about fakeraid. Currently the installation of grub will fail, since grub doesn't handle the fakeraid installation target (see bug #73141). There is also mention of grub installation issues on the Debian wiki page related to dmraid and installation.

Oct 26, 2017 · When nVidia was still producing the nForce chipsets on now older motherboards, Linux gained inbuilt support for both the dmraid target and for Grub2 support for booting from the array, and to this day there is great support for this chipset compared to other FakeRaid solutions.

Now boot off your fake RAID and see GRUB starting your new Debian installation. Troubleshooting / Alternatives (mdadm) An alternative for dmraid is mdadm. For that, install the package mdadm and set mdadm=true as kernel parameter in your grub configuration (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet mdadm=true" in /etc/default/grub).

Nov 21, 2009 · Ubuntu 9.10 is a new creature in several regards...GRUB2 and ext4...the latest Betas claim to have full ext4 and GRUB2 support...I think the issue I am having lies with a less well-known addition...9.10 at last has built-in dmraid support for both RAID stripes and mirrors.

I know this because I broke to the shell and chrooted into /target and ran grub-install and it mentioned something about a missing disk (an fdisk -l /dev/sda showed an empty partition table!). Reinstalling or recreating a correct partition table will allow the grub-install /dev/sda to succeed after.
