    I know this because I broke to the shell and chrooted into /target and ran grub-install and it mentioned something about a missing disk (an fdisk -l /dev/sda showed an empty partition table!). Reinstalling or recreating a correct partition table will allow the grub-install /dev/sda to succeed after.
