Of the most common types of email accounts, only POP3 accounts download the email to your computer. If you have an IMAP, or HTTP (Gmail, Outlook.com etc.) account, mail is not generally stored on your computer.

When I read the moderator's reply, "Windows 10 Mail App does not have the option ' Leave a copy of messages on the server', this feature is available in Microsoft Outlook email client." I assumed he meant that the default was to download the messages, which would be a real problem. That appears not to be the case.

I have Gmail set up to pull messages from a POP3 server. It's set up to remove the messages from the server when it does this ("Leave a copy of the retrieved message on the server" is unchecked). However some messages are being left on the server and never appear in Gmail.
