Support depends on Wine, a Windows "emulator" As usual with plugins, a crashing plugin will take Ardour down with it—and crashes in Windows VST plugins are more likely when used in this way; The dependence on Wine makes it almost impossible for the Ardour project to support this feature.

Sep 29, 2018 · Ardour on Linux only supports Linux VST (.so), Ardour on Windows only supports Windows VST (.dll) and in both cases the architecture must match: 32bit Ardour only loads 32bit VST. 64bit Ardour only 64bit VST. There is no bridging. For Ardour4 see Edit > Preferences > Plugins (where you can specify a path to VSTs).

While support for other synth plugin formats, like DSSI and native VST, may come in future releases, Ardour 3.0 looks set support only LV2 synths (though it of course supports LADSPA for effects, too). Ardour in Ardour 5.6 has support for native VST plugins. That is VST plugins built for OSX. I am not sure if these have a standard place to be, but as with other VSTs the search path can be edited at Plugins>VST. Windows. The most common plugins on Windows are VSTs.
