Mar 16, 2010 · There conlicting information on some of the threads show that you can add usb controller but if you look on page 164 of the basic administration guide for esx 4 and esxi 4 it says you can add it but is not supported. 2. If it is do able than my devices are not being seen. When i add the USB controller OS will install appropriate drives for it.

The assumption that I and probably others had made was that just because the partitions were not visible or mounted by ESXi, it does not mean the underlying USB device would also not be accessible. To access a FAT32 partition from a USB device in ESXi, you can use the mcopy utility from the ESXi Shell and for accessing an NTFS partition from a USB device in ESXi, you can use ntfscat utility.

Oct 08, 2009 · ESXi 4 and USB Support... I recently upgraded my ESXi 3.5 host to run the new ESXi 4 to get the USB support. I would like to attach a USB external hard drive to a guest VM running on that host. I upgraded the VM hardware to version 7, I added the USB controller virtual hardware to the VM and booted it up.

A very commonly sought after option for ESX and ESXi is the ability to pass through a locally attached USB device into a VM. While the release of ESX/ESXi 4.0 did provide the ability to add a USB controller to a VM, it is not possible to add a locally attached USB device to a VM.

Hey all! Is it true that ESXI 4 does not support any external USB drives? I want to run it instead of running VMware Server but it to support external USB drives. I know that there is a USB controller support but have been reading that no USB drives will be supported.

Sep 26, 2012 · VMware ESXi 5.1 has USB 3.0 support, but it's currently limited to using the vSphere Web Client to map client-side USB 3.0 devices to the remote VM. Long story short, turns out ESXi 5.1 doesn't really support USB 3.0 in the way you might think.
