It is Stanza Desktop that does not support images. If you convert a book written in another format to ePub using Stanza Desktop, the images will be stripped out. Calibre removes some but not all images. Neither program, however, is designed to support a file made up completely of images, like a comic book.

Stanza does support Japanese characters, but it does not yet support embedded fonts, which may be what your PDF is using. If you copy the text from the PDF and paste it into a text application (like Notepad.exe or TextEdit.app) do the Japanese characters show up for you?
