    I use a Java program to write out the XML that I am feeding to Xalan, and I am setting the encoding type to the writer that writes the file to "UTF-8", which matches what is written into the file. I would think that a document written out as UTF-8 by Java would cause no problems as UTF-8 input to Xalan, but I am finding that not to be so.
